Western
Astrology for Feng Shui - Part 1: Aloha, friends, I'm pleased to report that "Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity" is close to completion. We had planned to make the ebook version of this new title available in late August... but that was before we remembered that Mercury is "retrograde" for the rest of this month. Mercury retrograde is not a good time for anything having to do with communications or technology -- like introducing a new ebook product! There are good days coming up in mid-September, so we'll be launching "Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity" then. We'll announce the specific date and details in a future issue. If you prefer a paperback edition, we will probably be doing a softcover of "Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity" as well, but it will be at least several months -- or next year -- before that's available. And, honestly, there's a chance we'll decide not to do a softcover at all: ebooks are so much easier, and don't require the very considerable investment in production, printing, warehousing, and shipping that a paperback edition involves. Needless to say, we'll keep you informed of our paperback plans and decisions as they evolve. For those of you who are not familiar with using Western Astrology as a timing guide, this seems like a good opportunity to provide you with some guidelines to follow. If you want to use a Chinese almanac for timing, that's fine, too, of course. Just look up the current or future date in your Chinese almanac, and see if whether or not it's a lucky, neutral, or in auspicious day for whatever kind of activity you have planned. I use Western Astrology more often than the Chinese almanac because I've been using this method since long before I became familiar with feng shui. Even if you use a Chinese almanac to pick a good day, it makes sense to also check the Western calendar to make sure there are no contra-indications there as well. The two systems are very dissimilar, so a good day in one system might not be a good day in the other. There are three key factors that I consider when timing activities according to the Western astrological calendar: the "Void of Course" Moon; Moon phases; and retrograde planetary motion of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Here's a brief overview of what the Void of Course Moon is, and why you should pay attention to it. I'll address the other factors in future issues. Avoiding the Void of Course Moon The Moon moves through each of the twelve zodiac signs over a roughly two-and-a-half day period, during which time it "aspects," or forms specific angles to, one or more other planets. The period between the time when the Moon makes its last major aspect in one sign and the moment when it enters the next sign is known as the "void of course" Moon. This period can last anywhere from a few minutes to more than a day. When the Moon is void of course, judgment tends to be flawed, and anything that you begin during this time is unlikely to work out as planned. A Wall Street Journal study of 1,400 randomly selected bankrupt companies revealed that 100% of them (that's right, every single one!) had been founded when the moon was void of course. So, don't make important decisions, schedule important meetings, ask for expert advice (from your doctor, lawyer, or accountant, for example), sign important documents, apply for a job, mail important packages, send important emails, or make major purchases when the Moon is void of course. We never send out a newsletter, launch a new product, or upload website changes when the Moon is void of course. Since the Moon moves through several signs every week, there's a "watch out!" period for at least a few minutes, and usually for several hours or longer, every few days. A void of course Moon doesn't mean you have to take the day off or stay in bed. Use this time for rethinking, revising, researching, reevaluating, or relaxing with friends instead. This is a good time to get rid of clutter, clean out your desk, catch up on paperwork, and wrap up unfinished projects. It's a fine time for casual socializing (but not for a first date!), and is also particularly good for spiritual pursuits. When the Moon is Void of Course, it's taking a "time out" and if you do the same you'll be in alignment with this universal energy. Your feng shui activities should take the Void of Course Moon into account as well. It would be wise not to hang or place your cures, or make significant changes to your home, during a Void of Course Moon. Use this time instead for reading feng shui books, drawing up your floor plan, gathering paint or fabric samples, brainstorming a list of possible changes you could make, or researching sources for the products you'd like to purchase for your home. If you realize that you made a feng shui adjustment during a Void of Course Moon, the best remedy would be to take the cure down (if possible), clean it, and then put it back in place and re-empower it at a more auspicious time. You can find out when the Moon is Void
of Course by looking it up in an astrological calendar. Here's one online
resource, or you can do a Google search for "Void of Course Moon": We keep the Polaris "Good Timing Guide"
(which covers the Void of Course moon and more) on our desk and consult
it daily. Both spiral-bound and downloadable versions are available,
along with a good quarterly newsletter. You can learn more about it

Shui Q+A (Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.) Q: Can I do a cure in my home for someone who doesn't live here? My son-in-law has some health challenges, and I would like to do something for him. If it is possible, can you give me an idea of what I might do? A: Sorry, but feng shui doesn't work that way. Changes that you make to your home will only affect the people who are living in your home. Even if your son-in-law did live with you, you should never do feng shui to help someone else unless they specifically request your assistance. It's just not appropriate, no matter how good your intentions are. Feng shui can affect health, of course, so if your son-in-law is interested in feng shui he may be able to make some improvements to his own home that will help him. The actions or cures that will be helpful for him will depend on the specifics of his home and ailments. Nancy Santopietro's book, Feng Shui and Health: The Anatomy of a Home: Using Feng Shui to Disarm Illness, Accelerate Recovery, and Create Optimal Health, is a good place to start if you want to learn more. It's strictly BTB school, so if you prefer the compass-based methods of traditional Chinese feng shui you'll have to consult with a traditional practitioner.
