CHINESE NEW YEAR FORECAST & TIPS
The Chinese Lunar New Year -- beginning today, January 29, 2006 -- ushers in the Year of the Fire Dog. If you're curious what that could mean in general and for your animal sign, here are some online sources for Chinese astrology predictions. (Some experts say that the New Year astrology predictions won't take effect until the Solar New Year on February 4th, a few more days away.)
The Chinese Solar New Year begins on February 4th. If you follow the Flying Stars method of feng shui, this is when the new yearly influences "fly in." Here are some online resources for 2006 Flying Stars feng shui: PLEASE NOTE: Flying Stars feng shui advice and Chinese Astrology forecasts can sound ominous when "inauspicious sectors" and influences are discussed. The predictions you'll find at these and other sources are general comments, and may not be accurate for a particular home or individual. A less-than-favorable prediction for your Animal sign or for a particular sector of your home or office is not a guarantee of bad luck for you for the coming year.

Shui Q+A (Questions have been edited for clarity and length, and identifying details have been changed. Due to the high volume of email I receive, it is not always possible to respond to every question personally. I welcome your questions by email, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.) Q: : "We are planning to buy a new house.
Can you give me some advice on what I need to look out for in the house
and garden? The current owners of the house that we are interested in
are going through a divorce, so I would like to sort out any bad areas
before we move in." There's no way for me to advise you by email if or how the feng shui of the property may have contributed to the breakup of the current owner's marriage. There may be features of the property that in feng shui terms indicate a high probability of arguments and conflict, poor communication, or difficulty in a relationship. If any conditions that could be considered inauspicious for marriage are present, you'll need to evaluate whether they are of a type that can be remedied effectively or not. This is a very broad topic, so I can't give you a simple checklist by email. And, in my experience, there is almost always something going on with a property that is not in what I call "the feng shui index," but that stands out as important when I see it. Plus, if you are focused primarily on finding potential feng shui problems that would affect a marriage, you might miss other key indicators. For example, perhaps what's really going on with the feng shui of this property is something detrimental to wealth, and the marriage is ending because it crumbled under the strain of financial problems. So, the short answer to what you need to look out for in the house and garden is "anything and everything." That's why I recommend that you look for a local consultant who can visit this property with you - and any other properties you may be considering -- before you make your purchase decision. I also strongly recommend reviewing the "Flying Stars" feng shui of any property before deciding whether or not to buy. There may be other factors at play that can only be identified through a Flying Stars analysis. I have seen well-designed homes on nice lots that appear to have excellent feng shui, but where the Flying Stars are inauspicious for the facing direction and construction date of the house. If you do decide to purchase this house in spite of the Predecessor Chi, you should definitely do some kind of space clearing or purification/blessing ceremony before you move in, to make sure that the energy of the previous owners is cleared from the property.
